exam, green papaya and sex
Today three interesting things happened to me :
1. Environmental Science examination: An interesting examination with 24 MCQs and 2 short answers for two hours and very interesting to crack. I dont care what grade I get, but it allowed me to think and analyze certain points raised against the problems given in the question. That was a happy experience. My internal grades stand somewhere A. The examination should be fine I guess.
2. The scent of the Green Papaya : It was a Vietnamese movie, which I watched today afternoon after coming back from the examination. It is a beautiful movie (which also got a Camer'O Dor award in Cannes'). The cinematography is very excellent and catchy. The girl who plays the main role is beautiful and such a wonderful actress... It is a story of a girl and her life as a maid and then at the end - the mistress of the house. A very calm movie, refined movie I would say. I cannot explain the story here since there is nothing like a "story". I particularly liked the scenes and shots that depict the girl's love for nature - the cicada pets, the frogs that croak for mate during rains, the sparrows and the green papaya's white seeds. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. A small note : Vietnamese talk less only in movies :-)
3. Sexpo Singapore : Yes I attended the long awaited Sexpo in Singapore (http://sexposingapore.blogspot.com) and www.sexpo.com.sg.
The most interesting thing I noticed was that most of the attendees or visitors for the expo were old couples who happily held their hands around each other waists and kept listening to demonstrations in the condom and vibrator stalls; keenly watched the antique erotic pictures.
The second interesting thing was the antique paintings on wood, metal and ceramic - the erotic chinese couples. They have been used for ornamental purposes in brothels earlier and now are in singapore museum. They also had the equipments that were used to torture women who did not provide proper "service" to their customers in the brothel houses and so on.
Another interesting stall was the "house of condoms" - which housed variety of condoms, colours, sizes, shapes and features like lub and vibration. They also had numerous Vibrators which were of amazing varieties and I couldnt stop laughing at certain designs; Human brain can be crazily creative sometimes (which can be sometimes sick too). There were also Indian husbands buying vibrators for their wives (they came together). Three stalls issued free condom and lubricators. I collected them without fail and trashed in the exit. There was the most uninteresting fashion parade of women and men (both european and asian) wearing attractive two pieces and night wears for women and underwears for men. It was really stupid and was like kids show.
The section that was completely deserted was the sexual health - which had counselling and medical checup cubicles with doctors inside and the AIDS awareness stalls.
The dating and singles section was moderately crowded.
The next interesting thing I liked was the display for antique paintings and sculptors which depict sex life in the past China. The faces were too young looking with closed and twitched tiny eyes and it was like child porno. The beauty and lust of Kajuraho and Kamasutra illustrations was not observed in those Chinese paintings. (probably the eye of beholder dint see it ?)
One thing I hated the most were the display of slippers that were worn by women those ages to keep their vaginal muscles taut (which is supposed to give more pleasure to men). This practice is sick. Another antique showed a sculpture of a huge penis hugged by a female. (theme was "dependence of women"). I thought Bull shit. But it looked very powerful in its meaning. Most of the antiques displayed showed the practices of prostitutes and werent very healthy. The issue of commercial sex obsessed me once in the past, but had resolved with myself long back. I feel sorry for those women and respect them. Given a society without commercial sex workers, I cannot see control in certain men. However I do not blame men who are unmarried going to these women (better than spoiling a lady's life). It is only the married bastards who go to these women who should be shot alive.
However I was expecting something more advanced. I was atleast interested to see a full description of evolution of sexuality in the Asian perspective. Bad efforts, would say a disappointing expo (for fifteen dollars entry fee - it is worth nothing)
So this was my Saturday and it is midnight now, I am crunching some spicy murukku (left over of diwali purchase).
Will be in sleep mode in a few minutes...

Must say that's a pretty detailed, descreptive and informative post on the emerging trends in the marketing of performance and pleasure enhancing safety embedded gadgets.
vietnamese movie??!!... i used to wonder if i can ever watch movies in foregin languages... but NoMan's Land was one which I loved -- just the way the characters act is just awesome to watch and from ur description i feel that this would be once such movie...
sexpo singapore: atleast this event is creating the needed awareness... more such events shld be there (in india) so that taking abt. sex wouldn't be looked down upon ... (am remembering the khusboo incident which is just creating unnecessary fervor)... if more such awareness events are there, these khusboo-kinda-events would be taken in the right spirit
Karthik : yup, you said it right, the cinematography, background music and body language of the artists should capture the audience, it is a different cultural experience to watch another country's movies. Sometimes they are trash, but i guess we should be choosy to pick the good ones. No Man's Land is one of my favourites too; it is a very sensitive and affecting movie.
about sex: iam not that aware of kushboo issue, but what i read from internet, i guess it is given too much importance (as you had mentioned in your blog), yes awareness on sex as a healthy part of life is an imperative in India
:-) Good day !
