Set your blank page

Boeing, wind, cheetah, ostrich, PT usha, Owens...so many things come to my mind when I think about speed... Even Sandra Bullock (ah..what a name?!) and Keanu Reeves flash in my mind on the word...Even a fuel company that has "Speed" in its advertisement !!?
So what is that fast so as to remember and flash these many plus more things on hearing that five letter word - Mind !!!
Yes, mind is fleeter than wind... (near-light speed :-)
As the saying goes, one's mind can think more and more on practice...
I had unconsciously undergone this transition in a faster world of continuous thinking, where I can never have my mind blank. Always there is some home page :-)
It is a stress, where I miss to realize certain emotions related to blankness of mind - tranquility, peace, ecstasy...many and many.
After that realization, now I can almost describe what it is to be blank in mind. It is an excellent exercise which one does unconsciously, when sitting in a huge stretch of land (even a desert), staring at long rows of cars in car park, watching lines of people in a bus, following trails of humming bees... It can be anything in which you lose concentration and mind in... You stop thinking there and there - you think NOTHING... That is an amazing state of mind.
I stumbled upon this page accidentally and got caught with these words :
When society switches-over from physical work (agriculture) to mental work (scientific/ industrial/ financial/ fast visuals/ fast words ) the speed of thinking keeps on accelerating and the gaps between thinking go on decreasing.
There comes a time when there are almost no gaps.
People become incapable of experiencing/ tolerating gaps.
Emotion ends.
Man becomes machine.

Looks like a straightforward protocol, but it is quite complicate and not always true.
but one thing is sure, it is very difficult to have a blank mind and when you feel it, it is heavenly experience and gives a lot of revelations on human lives. Sounds spiritual, but i don believe in spirits or souls, since i am a strong believer of organic evolution theory. Leave it for you to experience and decide... I cannot ask you to close your eyes for a few minutes and try not to think anything... Then you would be thinking "i should not be thinking anything...", which is again a thought. Blankness arises from within unconsciously, when you are lost or arrested in some kind of visual or mental scenery and then it is splendid... :-D

The blank mind is difficult to comprehend. Scientists say that Meditations and Yoga help. And as you said, it most often happens unconsciously but once you say that you remembered it, doesn't that defeat the entire thing of blankness?
Switching off suddenly, when highly stressed is a great thing - a natural reaction of the body to reduce or relieve the stress atleast temporarily.
But being able to do it volunantarily, is something that can only be mastered through reflection or merely observing things without being judgemental, which is the essence of meditation. Indeed, when you meditate, rather than becoming sleepy or drowsy, you become highly cognizant of the surroundings, ofcourse prolonged meditation induces sleep, and this produces a deep sense of well-being and calmness. Why else would management gurus recommend spiritual gurus or spiritual gurus advocate management fundaes...Because management job is a stressful one and
the remedy being known to these gurus,
they fully exploit this weak-link - yes, people do benefit from these
programs . But the crux of the problem remains the same - Staying calm.
This is a thing which we should try doing - sit idle for 15 minutes in a place, without moving your position. I am sure with nothing to do during those 15 minutes, this would seem to be the toughest job yet.
naikutti : you are right that it is diff to comprehend blankness, but when you wake up frm some kind of sleepy beingness, and you knew you did not sleep, it means you went blank, and felt good later...
karthik : yes you are right, doing it voluntarily requires mastering mind, it is easy to sit for 15 minutes or more doing nothing, provided the environment is natural and beautiful :-), but staying calm in a manmade environment requires lot of effort !!!
