Sirai

I watched two interesting movies in the past two days.
Both are Tamil movies; I am surprised why I haven’t watched them earlier.
One is “Sirai” (Tamil for Prison)
Stars : Rajesh, Lakshmi
Yes the Rajesh who always comes as a teacher and “Kadhaiyalla nijam” Lakshmi.
Rajesh is a local rich loafer (minor).
Lakshmi is the beautiful wife of the village temple priest (Iyer)

Happy family

Whole village fears for Rajesh for his notorious rapes and murders, and his power over police and politics.
Rajesh rapes Lakshmi, Lakshmi’s husband leaves her alone in anger and frustration, leaves the village itself.
Lakshmi knocks Rajesh’s door for justice and forms his home as her prison, making Rajesh feeling guilty every time he sees her around in his house.
- Sin resulted in a happy family of intimate husband and wife breaking.
- Sins of numerous incidences (rapes) like this
It eats Rajesh fast and he corrects himself and protects Lakshmi from gossips.
He falls ill (Paralysis), still his last wish in death bed is to find Lakshmi’s husband and give them a happy life together.
Lakshmi realizes that he has changed himself and questions herself who is really the “man”? (aambadaiyaan)
Rajesh dies and Lakshmi’s husband comes to find her after knowing that Lakshmi actually dint “live” with Rajesh from Rajesh’s servant.
Lakshmi meanwhile finds the answer for her question
Her husband has shared only her joys and left when misery surrounded.
Rajesh though raped her, realized it and protected her and tried at least to change himself
When her husband asks her to come back to her, she says “It is better to be a widow of that man, instead of being your wife” (very dramatic, yet makes sense)
She again secludes herself into her prison.
It is not the normal Tamil Masala and it was released back in 70s I guess.

MS Viswanathan’s music doesn’t give a feeling of seclusion of the title “Prison”
The concept of God into the movie for punishing sins was very dramatic.
The constable character is quite impressive who believes in sincerity and honesty and nothing else.
If you happen to get a DVD, never switch on the subtitles.
Here are some excerpts during serious moments:
“No one can separate us, not even in our symmetry…blab la…”
In a song,
“My sole will protect you until your death in our love…”
Poor translations (like the Revenge of Sith – Starwars; the Chinese version translated it into Backstroke of the West – Star wars)
There seemed no purpose of every character’s actions in the movie, except for Lakshmi, because she has corrected Rajesh (and probably saved some women in the village)It was quite a different movie in various aspects in Tamil movie industry.
