suspects of the society
This is related to the previous human rights case only through the insolent police behaviours
Scene 1 :
“Are you waiting for Vaigai express kutty ?” This would be the first question thrown by the 35 year old fat woman sitting with a “p-p” bag (the blue or black bags with P all over it in a slanting degree) in Trichy junction waiting hall.
An innocent girl (kutty) would reply, “hee hee, yes” (or no)
“Oh, I am also waiting for the same, just arrived in the auto, had a lot of work in Thillai nagar…da..da..da.., by the way are you from Holy Cross college?...”
“No aunty (the most unnecessary word used by girls to unknown women), I am from Indra Gandhi college, Computer science department…”
“Oh, I knew girl1 and girl2 in that department, do you know ?...They passed out two years back, whats your name?” (sure that this girl wouldn’t know the girl1 and 2)
“Keerthana, Oh, is it? I don’t know”
“They were dayscholars, are you a day scholar?”
“No aunty, I am hosteller, am from Villupuram”
“Oh, that’s sad, you must be missing your parents right ?”
“Yes, [sigh] that’s true”
“So what do you do in the weekends?... I shall visit you some day in the hostel if you would like me to… It must be quite secluding from family environment, I can prepare some home food and bring for your friends too…When are visitors allowed in your hostel? ”
“Oh, that’s nice of you aunty, weekend, it is open for visitors, pls do not take pain to prepare food, See you, got to move…” Moving, not feeling very sure, why this lady suddenly turned out so affectionate.
Scene 2: (same railway station, 9 am)
“Are you waiting for Pallavan express ma?” A wide grin.
“Yes” the girl is naturally suspicious and her gut feelings say something is wrong about this lady; (she definitely doesn’t look like a traveler, either she is picking pocket or a les.)
“you look like you are from Chennai, working here or studying?
“Studying” (continues to answer since it is not correct to grow suspicious on everyone you see.)
“You look very tired, you travelled long to reach the station?”
“No” (oh, she must be interested in females for some reason, why is she staring at my neck)
“can you look after my bag for a while?”
“Sorry, I need to enquire the police about the platform number, I am moving, see you”
(go away from that place immediately)
The lady escapes as the police enter the scene.
Three months pass by…
I am called by my junior girl saying that there is a visitor for her in her room and she wants to introduce me to her.
I enter her room, I see that LADY in her room… My God.
Now let me describe the sense – My junior is Keerthana in scene 1.
I am the person involved in Scene 2.
Keerthana has gone all nuts about that lady and a whole group of nine girls were sitting around her listening to the stories of that lady, who has stretched herself in Keerthana’s bed and talking non-stop. She enquires everyone’s personal details and says “Oh, you are from Theni, you know this person, he is the councilor of this area..” the details are exactly correct that the girls were so impressed with her.
I got irritated and said just a hi and moved out. But still wondering and shocked why is this lady inside the girls hostel enquiring personal details (including phone number)
I returned to my room and expressed my anger towards my juniors to my close gang of four. In half an hour, Keerthana was back to me telling “That lady is increasingly talking too much and says she would like to STAY tonight… akka (sister) I don’t know what to do, Can you ask her to leave”
“You invited, you bear” I snapped.
My gang supported to help her and we walked to her room and since we are the leading rowdy gang in the hostel, just asked the girls to move out and asked the guest to move out since it is 6 pm (closing time for visitors)
She immediately got up and packed her bag, waving bye and telling that she will visit soon.
Me and Cathy decided we should complain this lady whatever the case maybe.
Rushed in cycle to entrance security and complained “A lady will roll down here; Just hold her and not let her out”
Luckily one of the out of the campus friends gave a two wheeler, rushed to Hostel warden, launched our complaint.
Warden came and securities were enquiring her, she couldn’t give sensible answers, She started yelling “You are blocking a woman like this and troubling her, what a nuisance”
Warden called police, since we stressed her to do. We refers to NINE girls, just nine girls.
We slowly removed the handbag from her stealthily when securities interrogated the lady.
We found these :
Passport size photographs of 15 teen age boys
Passport size photographs of 15 teenage girls
An ISD bill to Dubai for 1200 Indian rupees
A Dubai address
A small address book with lots of addresses (many were hostel addresses)
We felt sharply alarmed and noted down the Dubai number and address.
Here comes the police who enquired her with many blunt questions. She answered them without any coherence. She told us she is from Trichy, but said to Police that she is from Visakapattinam, when police asked for phone number, she gave a number that is not Visakapattinam number (STD code was wrong)
The lady is taken in after getting some “mock” beatings from the police constable.
She turned to me before leaving, “I will take care of you later”
I grinned , “As you please Madame”
My warden called me “Nothing should go to press” There was a flash, the press has already come (Oh, I did it man, I generally want things to come up to light, so that authorities cannot escape without answering)
She sighed and went back.
The whole hostel was gossiping about this for two days and forgot it.
Our gang wanted to know what happened to that lady the very next day.
I rang up the police station and got information that she is in Thriuverumboor (Trichy) police stn for women. We somehow got the feeling that she is going to be released, since there was no written complaint launched.
So we prepared a mock complaint that a gold ring is missing from our room and would like to check her handbag – three girls (including me) went to that police station, described the above. The women police were so stupid that they allowed US to check her handbag. They also stripped her saree alone to see whether she has hidden the ring.
One girl was checking the handbag, meanwhile I stole the addressbook, and excused for the toilet. The third girl kept the women police busy talking about the recent TV serials.
I noted down all the addresses from the notebook in the washroom.
Returned, put everything in place and thanked them and left the place.
We started out investigations by called certain numbers, mentioning her name (oh, this heroine is called “Jagathaambaal”), calculated combinations of conversations, different accents based on the STD code, voice modulations and got a clear picture of the network operating behind this lady. Luring women into job opportunities and getting them trapped into some sort of brothel business (details from Dubai phone number said so)? Or cheating them for money they would deposit believing that this lady would arrange some job. For such an activity, Coimbatore was their head quarters.
Meanwhile, we realized that the news has been published in a different way in cheap local newspapers like Dinathanthi, dinamalar that “A lady who is a broker for boyfriends visited so and so hostel and many young girls fall trap to it”
Again, the gang of nine marched to the press offices who published this and asked the manager to bring that particular reporter to front. We stood in front of the office for two hours and then he asked apology to that girl and they published it the next day too.
Meanwhile, Since I had contacts with the press people, we sent out our detailed reports to Junior Vikatan, The Hindu, Sun TV with all proofs of phone numbers and complete network.
No ONE, NO ONE responded to our reports.
Only Kumudam reporter responded and they dint do the followup.
We then approached the DGP asking for justice.
Here he gives the explanation for release of the lady
“She is mentally retarded and what you ladies did was a false complaint”
We threw all the reports in his table and asked “Could a mentally retarded lady establish such a huge network?”
He replied “Don’t watch too many action movies and get back to studies”
When we stood stubborn “Okay, can you show me the proof of complaint you gave”
We pleaded our warden to give a copy of that – She coolly replies “We dint launch a written complaint, since University’s reputation would be spoilt”
We decided to launch one by ourselves,
Next day that girl’s father comes to hostel with a Huge knife “you girls leave this topic and concentrate on your studies”
Disciplinary note sent to everyone not to get involved in unnecessary acts of breach of disciplinary code of the university.
Slap me man instead.
We girls were feeling so disappointed, She has been released longback, all our efforts went futile. We felt like fools spending out money to identify an anti-social element with all details of the whole network.
The exams approached soon and the gang dissolved into two members.
One was me and the other was Cathy.
The gang was already notorious for strikes and such placard scenarios.
So no one was suspicious about the whole thing.
The file was closed.
When I graduated and vacated my hostel, I dusted clean this file from underneath my cupboard and realized the implications of “power” game and how we lost it.
If the lady has kidnapped a girl after two months, probably the issue would have been in mouths and minds for two more weeks.
Who should I blame?
The girl who was mindless in giving personal details with such a lady?
The university authorities who did not check visitor details?
The warden who did not launch a written complaint, thinking that university reputation is more important than the security of the girls?
The press who had to play a vital and honest role in bringing out facts to light and not publishing “hot” untrue details?
The parents who try to suppress the rational anger that sprouts in young blood?
The DGP who was so blatant and played the power game?
Or me and Cathy who closed the file and later threw everything into the dustbin in anger and despair…?
If we got to set things straight, all the above people should be punished, automatically “Jagathaambal”s will be weeded off the society.
If only everyone could do their duty sincerely…

Hmmm..you seem to have been really bold to do whatever you have mentioned in the blog..I personally might not have taken the pain to do that...police complaint et al..
that was an bold effort... i think everybody is to blame (remember anniyan movie -- the way vikram's father describes the death of his daughter and who should be punished)...
the problem is people lack moral values...
and its always a dicey situation to talk or not to talk with someone unknown stranger in railway station/bus-stop... sometimes it might just be opposite to what our gut feeling thinks...
karthik - true, at this age, I dont think I would have taken up too, maybe a different kind of move, but definitely not so much pains (this was four years back)
naikutti Yes like Anniyan, no moral values. But we made sure to alert that girl not to trust any people atleast instantly, there is some meaning for "gut feelings", I believe that strongly and try to use it at times, if the feeling is too strong .
